General Information of Micronesia


Did you know that the world's largest crabs live in Micronesia? This small but interesting country is located in the heart of the Pacific Ocean. It has an area of 700 km2 and a population of 115,000. Its capital is Palikir and its currency is the US dollar. Its current form of government is a federal democratic republic and it is led by its ninth president, David W. Panuelo. Micronesia is home to the world's only ancient city built on a coral reef, and its tourist sites and hidden gems make this country rich in culture.


  • Micronesia is a subregion of Oceania, comprising thousands of small islands scattered across the western Pacific Ocean.



  • Its capital is Palikir located on the Pohnpei island.

  • The Federate States of Micronesia (FSM) is a sovereign nation consisting of four island states: Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae.



  • Micronesia has a population of 115,000 people, most of whom living in urban areas supported by agriculture and fishing.

  • An interesting fact about its population is that 1 in 10 people are color blind, which makes it the country with the most color blindness in the world.


  • FSM faces a high degree of natural disaster risk, as the islands experience a cyclone season each year.

  • PRESIDENT: David W. Panuelo was born on April 13, 1964, is the ninth president of the Federated States of Micronesia since May 11, 2019.

  • The flag of Micronesia is sky blue; this represents the Pacific Ocean and it has four white stars that represent the four islands that make up Micronesia.
